Experience a real 'Day in the life' from the past

I teach groups all about the Stone age, Bronze age, Iron age, Romans, Anglo Saxon and The Viking Age. Each session is designed to provide a full sensory outdoor learning experience of living in the past and how each period has helped shape and inform the way we live our lives today.

Since 2014 I have introduced a forest school approach to teaching children all about history in the form of a 'Day in the life of 'History sessions. Giving groups a unique opportunity to learn about history in the form of 'A day in the life of' experience.

The activities are designed to be structured but not directive, allowing freedom and space for the children to make their own decisions and informed choices to problem solve and learn by 'doing' whilst keeping themselves and each other safe and happy.

We make bread dough, light fires, construct shelters and learn traditional crafts and skills that were key to the survival of our ancestors.

Who am I?

My name is Vix Powell, I am a qualified Forest school leader with over 17 years of experience of working with children. For the last 6 years I have set up, developed and run the Forest school site and outdoor history programme at Compton Verney Art gallery and Park in Warwickshire.

Providing a magical and exciting outdoor learning space for pre-school children and their families, working with Cubs, Brownies and youth groups to encourage and develop their natural ability to thrive in nature. The sessions I run are designed for groups to experience a very 'hands on' approach to all aspects of the curriculum and in 2017 I was runner up as 'Innovator of The year' at the national LOTC (Council for Learning Outside the Classroom) awards.

Working with schools for many years I have come to realise the increasing cost of coach travel, insurance and availability of staff and adults along with government cuts can often make school trips no longer a viable option.

With this in mind, I am so excited to have become a freelance Forest school leader for the next stage of my outdoor teaching journey. I now offer my sessions as a 'pop up' Forest School experience specialising in 'Day in the life of' history sessions that can turn your outdoor space into a history lesson you won't forget!!

I also realise that although we can all dress for the weather and I do try and stay outside where possible that there are some instances where the weather is too extreme and therefore I can bring the outdoor experience 'in' and set up in your school hall.

As of spring 2019 there will be an option for you to visit me in a beautiful woodland space near to Stratford upon Avon for a unique 'Day trip to the past'!

Traditional games and crafts, lots of fun

From stoneage bread making to Saxon chequers, from Bronze age clay pots to Wattle and Daub with real fresh poo! Children love getting involved and learning through hands-on fun.

More Sessions

In addition to running living history sessions, I can offer a wide range of other activities suitable for all ages. Contact me using the form below and we can discuss your particular needs

Forest School

I run Forest School sessions that teach younger children the joys of nature and being outside

We do activites that encourage them to explore and learn as they play, including bug hunting, den building, mud painting, silly songs and maybe a marshmallow (or two) toasted on the fire

Wildcraft Adventure

This special holiday club session takes inspiration from video games and creates a real-life world with hunting for resources, trading at the market, building shelters and crafting using tools to earn points

To find out more details or book a session, visit my partners at Muddy Footprints

Corporate Days

Bring your colleagues to the woods and learn some survival skills. You may never have to light a fire with a bow drill in the office, but you'll have a great time and bond as a team

I can tailor sessions to your needs, whether you want to improve communication, build trust or work out which of your team could survive a zombie apocalypse!
